Atlanta Jazz Listings for 9/11/21

Here are your Atlanta Jazz Notes event listings for September 11th, 2021

Saturday, September 11th - Guitarist Trey Wright has a residency at the Third Door in Downtown Marietta, and you should make the trip to hear him play. He’s great. I am going to make it out there soon. He will perform from 6 to 8:15PM today.

Also on Saturday night, tonight, head to St. James Live for a special tribute to the great singer Al Jarreau, featuring vocalist Nat George and a host of great musicians. There are two shows, one at 7PM and another at 9:30PM. Get you tickets at stjamesliveatl.com. 3220 Butner Rd. Atlanta

Sunday, September 12th - The Justin Varnes Quartet will perform a tribute to the great John Coltrane at the Velvet Note in Alpharetta. This event usually sells out, so get tickets asap. In addition to playing great music, Varnes will discuss various aspects of Coltranes life and career during the show. 4075 Old Milton Parkway, Alpharetta.

Monday, September 13th - Ten ATL is the place to be on Monday nights. Their jam session attracts the best local plays and the occasional special guest. Trumpeter Nicholas Payton made a surprise appearance recently. Reservations are required, as seating is limited. 495 Flat Shoals Ave NE, Atlanta. Call 404-940-4777 for more info.

Wednesday, September 15th - Bring your proof of vaccination (I applaud them for requiring this) and head to Red Light Cafe for the weekly jam session led by the great trumpeter and educator Gordon Vernick. This is one of the best jazz jam sessions in town. You can hear many of the jazz voices of tomorrow in addition to established veterans. 9 to midnight. 553-1 Amsterdam Ave NE, Atlanta.

Thursday, September 16th - Guitarist Rod Harris plays with his great band at the Whitley Hotel in Buckhead (formerly the Ritz-Carlton). Harris is an accomplished guitarist and always performs with a group of stellar musicians. 7-9PM

Also, you can stop by the Commerce Club in Downtown Atlanta to see me perform with the great keyboardist Emmanuel Chops Smith. We play every Thursday from 6-9PM. The music, food, drinks, and view are always on point.
